The tower’s architecture and engineering were performed by Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill of Chicago, with Adrian Smith as chief architect, and Bill Baker as chief structural engineer. The primary contractor was Samsung C&T of South Korea.

The total cost for the project was about US $1.5 billion; and for the entire “Downtown Dubai” development, US $20 billion. In March 2009, Mohamed Ali Alabbar, chairman of the project’s developer, Emaar Properties, said office space pricing at Burj Khalifa reached US $4,000 per sq ft (over US $43,000 per m2) and the Armani Residences, also in Burj Khalifa, sold for US $3,500 per sq ft (over US $37,500 per m2).

The opening of Burj Khalifa was held on 4 January 2010. The ceremony featured a display of 10,000 fireworks, light beams projected on and around the tower, and further sound, light and water effects. The celebratory lighting was designed by UK lighting designers Speirs and Major. Using the 868 powerful stroboscope lights that are integrated into the facade and spire of the tower, different lighting sequences were choreographed, together with more than 50 different combinations of the other effects.

The event began with a short film which depicted the story of Dubai and the evolution of Burj Khalifa. The displays of sound, light, water and fireworks followed. The portion of the show consisting of the various pyrotechnic, lighting, water and sound effects was divided into three. The first part was primarily a light and sound show, which took as its theme the link between desert flowers and the new tower, and was co-ordinated with the Dubai Fountain and pyrotechnics. The second portion, called ‘Heart Beat’, represented the construction of the tower in a dynamic light show with the help of 300 projectors which generated a shadow-like image of the tower. In the third act, sky tracers and space cannons enveloped the tower in a halo of white light, which expanded as the lighting rig on the spire activated.

The ceremony was relayed live on a giant screen on Burj Park Island, as well as several television screens placed across the Downtown Dubai development. Hundreds of media outlets from around the world reported live from the scene. In addition to the media presence, 6,000 guests were expected.

CEO of Nakheel announced during a site visit to Al Furjan that Nakheel is in process of restarting all of its short-term projects. Restructuring plan expected to be finalized by end of year 2010.

Chris O’Donnell, Nakheel CEO, said: “We should have all the agreements with contractors in place by the end of October to restart construction at all of our eight short-term projects. We’ve had good discussion with the banks and consolidations, restructuring should be pretty much completed by end year”.

Al Furjan, off Emirates Road in Dubai, is the first project on which Nakheel has reached an agreement with its contractor working on 300 villas to complete what was started two years back.

Tarek Zoabi, managing partner at Al Shafar Transport and Contracting, confirmed that work was under way on 63 villas to be handed over in the first quarter of 2011 and the remaining 237, many already around 60% complete, by the fourth quarter of next year.

However, The developer Nakheel would not reveal when and how much of its long-term projects will eventually go ahead, but confirmed that what has already been dredged of projects like Palm Deira is being maintained.

Chris O’Donnell added: “The focus first is to finish the restructuring and with that the eight projects within the next two years”.

Short-term projects are phases or components of master developments where construction has progressed significantly. They include initial phases of Al Furjan, Jumeirah Park, Veneto and Badrah at the Waterfront’s Madinat Al Arab, Jumeirah Village South, Jumeirah Heights, Jumeirah Island, as well as finishing up bits and pieces on Palm Jumeirah.

Dubai Internet City is an information Technology park created in October 2000 by the government of Dubai as a free economic zone and a strategic base for companies.

Dubai Internet City (DIC) presently has over one and half million square feet of prime commercial office space, in which over 850 companies with over 10,000 workers are based. Dubai Internet City is about 25km south of downtown Dubai city, on Sheikh Zayed Road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It is located adjacent to Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence and Palm Jumeirah. DIC is less than 1 km from the sea coast and is near several five star hotels.

According to Wikipedia the economic rules of DIC allow companies to avail themselves of a number of ownership, taxation and custom related benefits which are guaranteed by law for a period of 50 years. One model of operation includes 100% foreign ownership, similar to those prevailing in other designated economic zones in the United Arab Emirates. These freedoms have led many global information technology firms, such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Cisco, HP, Nokia, Cognizant and Siemens, as well as UAE based companies such as i-mate, Acette, to move their regional base to the DIC.

Despite being suffered from worst debt crises Dubai is still known for its luxury lifestyle and amazing structures. Last month a new cruise terminal was opened in Port Rashid, Dubai. Burj Khalifa is the Tallest building in world with 2717feet tall, located in Dubai. Construction began on 21st September 2004 with exterior of the building completed on October 1st, 2009. The Building officially opened on January 4th, 2010.

Burj Khalifa Tower is a part of the 490acres flagship development called Downtown Burj Khalifa (Downtown Burj Dubai prior to its launch) at Sheikh Zayed Road, Near Dubai’s main business district. Meraas Development, a new developer, has burst on the stage of property in Dubai with the announcement of its first-ever project worth Dh350 amazing and one that involves millions of dollars from the world’s tallest buildings – with varied microclimates and a mini-Manhattan.

Jumeirah Gardens will be fully integrated, mixed-use development project located in the old Satwa area west of Sheikh Zayed Road and flanked by Al Diyafa Street and Safa Park. The project aims to serve a population of 50,000 to 60,000 residents.

The announcement comes amid a global market rout that has broken investor confidence worldwide, but goes to show that Dubai is determined to continue with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The development will redefine living in one of the most popular districts of Dubai, currently undergoing demolition to pave the way for the new project.

The project will comprise seven distinct areas, covering approximately 110 million square feet of land, including islands. One section will host Dubai Park, which is half the size of Safa Park.

The first phase of Jumeirah Gardens will cover about 820,000 square meters. It includes six major blocks of buildings with high, medium and low-office, retail and residential, two hotels and an area of high-end shopping.

Delivery of the first phase is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2011, with completion scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013.

CEO of Meraas Development, Sina Al Kazim told Gulf News: “Every great city has a large park. London has its Hyde Park, New York has its Central Park. This will be Dubai Park. The park will be surrounded on all sides by residential apartments, duplexes, penthouses, villas and commercial buildings.

Meraas is planning at least eight landmark buildings in Jumeirah Gardens, one of Dubai, one of Park Avenue and Park Gate, which will have six buildings.

The islands are made up of East Bay and the coast, predominantly residential, but also include hotels and resorts.

Dubai is the largest city in the UAE. Abu Dhabi, Dubai borrow 10 billion U.S. dollars last month to help Dubai pay some of their debts.

Burj El Khalifa has 160 floors. The 158th floor will house the world’s highest mosque years. The world, aos swimming pool will be higher in the floor 76. An observation platform, sure to be popular among tourists, is on the floor 124.

The eclipse new skyscraper Taipei 101 in Taiwan as the world’s tallest building years. Taipei 101 is 1666 feet.

Burj El Khalifa is about twice as tall as the Empire State Building in New York. Its tower can be seen from a distance of 60 miles.

Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago, once the world’s tallest building years, is now reduced to the fifth highest. Willis Tower has 108 floors and 1,450 feet. If the John Hancock Building stacked on top of the tower of Willis, it would be almost as tall as the Burj-Khalifa.

While Dubai’s economic problems recent years, developers of the Burj Khalifa said that the project to turn a profit. Ninety percent of the space in the building has reportedly been sold. This includes 1044 residential apartments and 49 floors of office space.

Another highlight for tourists is 900 feet high at the source of the base of the tower, known as the world’s highest-performing aos source.

Members of the public will see the launch of Burj Dubai, January 4, 2010 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, next to Burj Park Island.

The park of 29,000 square meters is located in Burj Dubai Lake and will be a spectacular new leisure attraction in Downtown Burj Dubai, the 500-acre “mega project”, developed by Emaar Properties and anchored by Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world.

Overlooking the seafront of The Dubai Mall, Burj Park island also has a designated area to see the Fountain of Dubai, and is completely landscaped with greenery and seating areas.

Visitors to the park on Jan. 4 will attend the opening ceremony of Burj Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, from a particular viewpoint. The date also marks the fourth anniversary of the date of accession of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, as the Ruler of Dubai.
