Dubai Internet City is an information Technology park created in October 2000 by the government of Dubai as a free economic zone and a strategic base for companies.

Dubai Internet City (DIC) presently has over one and half million square feet of prime commercial office space, in which over 850 companies with over 10,000 workers are based. Dubai Internet City is about 25km south of downtown Dubai city, on Sheikh Zayed Road between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It is located adjacent to Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence and Palm Jumeirah. DIC is less than 1 km from the sea coast and is near several five star hotels.

According to Wikipedia the economic rules of DIC allow companies to avail themselves of a number of ownership, taxation and custom related benefits which are guaranteed by law for a period of 50 years. One model of operation includes 100% foreign ownership, similar to those prevailing in other designated economic zones in the United Arab Emirates. These freedoms have led many global information technology firms, such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle Corporation, Sun Microsystems, Cisco, HP, Nokia, Cognizant and Siemens, as well as UAE based companies such as i-mate, Acette, to move their regional base to the DIC.

Despite the global credit crunch and recent crisis in Dubai its been reported that Dubai has the lowest unemployment rate due to high level of economic activity. The UAE’s unemployment rate fell to 4.2% last year from double-digit.

Minister of Economy, Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, released Economic Report for 2009 by the National Statistics Bureau on this weekend.

The report showed that 53% of the UAE population is employed while 19.9% has no desire to work. Employment rate among expatriate workers is 79% while about 45% of UAE nationals are employed.

According to report majority of unemployed are fresh graduates under age of 25. The economically active workforce is aged between 25 to 54 years. Of this group, 42% is female while the average of the male working population in this age bracket is 89%.

According to the report among the emirates, the unemployment rate is lowest in Dubai due to the high level of economic activity.

However, The report showed an unexpected increase in the UAE population, touching 8.19 million in 2009, up from 8.07 million in 2008, a figure that is nearly double the 4.1 million reported during the 2006 census.

With a total GDP of Dh914 billion, this translates to Dh111,599 per capita GDP in 2009 — one of the highest in the world.

After becoming a very popular tourist attraction. UAE had provided many visa policies for tourists to make the visa process very easy and simple.

Major General Nasser Al Awadi Al Menhali, senior Interior Ministry Official told gulf news reporter that citizens of 34 countries do not have to wait one month before applying for a visit visa after leaving the UAE.

He said: “Citizens of nations who need to obtain an entry permit into the country through any one of the residency departments will not be able to apply for another visa immediately after they leave the country”.

Maj. Gen Al Menhali explained UAE visa policy, He said: “Even if they stay here for two days and leave the country, they can come back after one month. If a visitor comes here, then goes on vacation to a nearby country and wants to come back, he should wait for one month before returning here”.

Maj. Gen. Al Menhali said these rules apply to people who need to apply for a visa prior entering the UAE. “There are citizens of 34 countries who do not need a visa in advance. These citizens can get a visa upon arrival in the UAE”.

He said since the visa is issued upon arrival, these citizens can come back here any time they like.

“Citizens of these 34 countries need to show their passport to the immigration officer at any of the country’s borders and they will have a new visa stamped. They can come and go as much as they want and at any time they want,” he said.

A souk is essentially a market area of an Arab city where you can get anything from fresh food to artifacts such as a shisha and tourist type objects. If you want to get to know the touch of Dubai lifestyle then spending a time at souk is something you would love to be part of.

Here we are with some best souks in Dubai. Whether you want an Arabian coffee pot or a handwoven carpet, some prayer beads or other intricacies of Arab culture.

Gold Souk

Gold souk is the most popular and the must see souk without a doubt. It is one of those places which has to be seen with all the glistening gold in the shop front, mixed in with the hawkers trying to sell their fake handbags and knocked off clothing.

Khan Murjan

Khan Murjan is a new area in Wafi city mall, which has more than 150 shops with traders selling a variety of handicrafts. If you can catch it during the day you will see the light coming through the amazing stained glass window. And once you have finished your shopping, have some coffee near the waterwheel in the courtyard.

Souk Madinat Jumeirah

The Souk at Madinat Jumeirah precedes Khan Murjan by a few years and in its airy wooden interior, you feel somewhat taken back in time. The stores are more expensive, but some of them are exclusive. This is something not to miss if you are spending a day or evening at Madinat.

Souk Al Bahar

Souk Al Bahar is located in at Downtown Burj Dubai and has a modern day feel and attitude to a souk, with restaurants and some larger retail shopping outlets. However, in the main there are some great little stores that are worth a peak, and with the restaurants at the waterside, this because a great place to spend an evening.

Al Jaber Gallery

Sometime you want to just get the gifts without the buzz of the market. This is exactly what Al Jaber does. Located in the middle of the Mall of the Emirates, you can pick up your bits and pieces, so it seems as if you have done the trawl for your friends and family. This is market shopping cheating at its best. No haggling, no buzz, just good quality souvenirs in one place.

Meena Bazaar

Can you call Meena (or Mina) Bazaar a souk? It’s noisy and has the brightest colours in the store fronts. This is the place to get your material and clothing for your Indian clothes. But you can pretty much buy anything here if you ask the store owners. Meena Bazaar is falling apart, tacky and has the greatest heart. This is worth a trip to see the heart of India in the heart of Dubai. If making clothing is your thing, then Satwa, which is basically a square is worth going to, if you have the time.

Spice souk

The spice souk is the one souk that actually feels like a souk. The smell of spice is great as you walk through the tight alleyways and streets. Worth the walk through to see all the spices piled high, and to buy your discount saffron.

Perfume Souk

If you want to concoct your own Arabic scent, and you have sampled the scents of the Arabian Oud and similar smells in the malls, then the Pefume Souk is for you. The smell of Arabian perfume is completely different to western scents and is oil based, so consider this before you commit your money.

Karama Market

This is fake central. If that is what you want, this the place to get your knocked off goods.

PLACES NOT WORTH GOING:
Places not worth going to if you are on holiday would be the fish souk – unless you like watching people buying fish, the electronics souk, where you cant judge the quality of product and the Deira covered souk, which is odd clothing plus cheap stuff stuff for your house.
