Dubai Plans to build 18 more pedestrian bridges this year after a report issued from Dubai Police Department.

Dubai Police statistics show that although there was a 20 per cent drop in pedestrian deaths in 2008 compared to 2007, there was a 13 per cent increase in accidents involving pedestrians last year. There were 754 reported accidents with 106 pedestrian deaths last year compared to 665 accidents causing 132 pedestrian deaths in 2007.

According to Dubai Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) there are 22 pedestrian bridges in Dubai. Eight of them built last year. RTA is planning to increase the no. of pedestrian bridges to 40 by the end of 2009.

“We will have a total of 40 pedestrian bridges by the end of this year,” said a spokesperson of the Dubai Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).

“Our aim is to provide maximum safety to pedestrians and to reduce traffic accidents involving people crossing the roads,” said the spokesperson.

Almost all the pedestrian bridges are air-conditioned and have escalators and lifts to encourage their use.

Dubai will have 97 pedestrian crossings by March 2010 when the Dubai Metro is completed. All the 47 stations of the Dubai Metro will have pedestrian crossings, including 37 bridges and 10 underpasses.

The RTA has also installed signs near pedestrian bridges warning people not to cross the roads at undesignated places. It is a violation to cross the road at undesignated places, especially on a road that has a speed limit above 80km/h. The fine for this violation is Dh200.

Fourteen people were killed while crossing Emirates Road, a 12-lane highway, 12 deaths reported on Shaikh Zayed Road and 8 in the Al Quoz Industrial area.

Al Sufouh Tram will become operational in 2012, complementing Dubai Metro with an equally trendy and comfortable mode of public transport.

Construction of the first phase of the ambitious project has started, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) said on Tuesday.

The project, costing nearly Dh4 billion, is one of the most important projects of the RTA after Dubai Metro and will be completed by 2012, it said.

If the Dubai Metro stations look stunning with their seashell shape, stations of the Al Sofouh Tram will feature a unique diamond-shaped front design. The consortium of the France-based Alsotam and Belgium-based Besix has started construction work, Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Chairman, said.

Apart from the consortium, US-based Parsons and France-based Sistra are also engaged in the project.

The tram track will be laid along Al Sufouh Road but will have elevated sections in some areas of Dubai Marina.

The track will be parallel to Dubai Metro’s Red Line. Three tram stations will be linked with three metro stations on Shaikh Zayed Road via footbridges for passengers to change the mode of transport according to the destinations they want to go. Al Sufouh Tram will be linked to the Palm Monorail at the entrance of Palm Jumeriah from Sufouh Road for passengers travelling between the areas served by both projects.

The project will serve residential and commercial areas in Al Sufouh, Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence, the official said.

The tram will have a golden carriage (first class), a silver carriage for common people and another carriage for women and children.

Carriages will have top-class interiors and will be fitted with the latest data transmitting and display systems.

A modern and safe ground power cable system will supply power to the tram, and all stations will be fitted with central air-conditioning systems.

In Dubai, E11 is known as “Sheikh Zayed Road”. 347 miles(558.4 km) Sheikh Zayed Road is the longest road in the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Road stretches from the city of Abu Dhabi and ends in Ras Al Khaimah, running roughly parallel to UAE’s coastline along the Persian Gulf.

The road was Formed in 1980 and was formerly known as Defence Road. Between 1993 and 1998, 30 kilometers(19 mi) of the road was expanded. Along with this improvement came a change in the name. Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai at the time, named the road after the then president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The first stretch of the highway between Trade Center Roundabout and Interchange 2 is home to most of Dubai’s skyscrapers, including the Emirates Towers and the Burj Dubai. The highway also connects other new developments such as the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and Dubai Waterfront.

The road will soon have most of the Red Line of Dubai Metro running alongside it.
