According to a survey held by Yahoo Maktoob Research, Dubai has become most popular shopping destination in World beating mega cities like Paris, London, New York, Beijing etc.

Over the last decade Dubai has established itself as a city of shopping malls, luxurious lifestyle destination and land of opportunities for retailers from all over the world. Now Dubai has become the number one global tourism destination.

In addition to a long list of luxury brands and a wide variety of retail choices, Dubai’s shopping centre’s have also been globally recognized for their distinctive amenities, such as the one-of-a-kind indoor ski slope at the Mall of the Emirates, and the majestic view of the iconic Burj Khalifa tower at the Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping in the world.

Survery, which polled 2,900 people from Arab region, found that 32% of respondents voted Dubai as the number one shopping destination. Paris was ranked the second best shopping destination with 13% of the vote, followed by Beijing, Istanbul and London in joint third with 5%.

Eyad Ali Abdul Rahman, executive director media relation division & business development, Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), said: “Dubai has an exciting mix of amenities that give customers a truly unique and pleasurable shopping experience. Moreover, Dubai’s impressive collection of international brands and retail outlets rival those of any other shopping city in the world – a key attribute that gives the Emirate a distinctive edge as the best shopping destination in the Arab World. Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing will build on this distinction to develop more innovative campaigns and promotional activities that will further reinforce the reputation of Dubai as the world’s shopping capital”.

Shopping-oriented festivals such as the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) and Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) have likewise strengthened Dubai’s claim as a global shopping haven.

According to a new survey released by the Foreign Investment Office of Dubai Economic Department shows that more than 80% of investors are planning to maintain or increase their investment in Dubai. This shows investors high level confidence on Dubai economic.

Almost half of the investors who are planning to increase their investments in Dubai will reinvest in their current businesses. 29% of investors planning to start joint ventures with local partners and 14% planning to acquire shares in local companies to grow their presence in market.

Chief executive of Foreign Investment Office(FIO), Fahad Al Gergawi said: “The general rule that the current investor is essential to future investment flows appears to hold true in Dubai. This is especially important in times of global turbulence when many investors seek new opportunities”.

The report reveals that telecommunications and utilities are more attractive for investors than other sectors.

Dubai is also a top 10 choice amongst executives from the financial services industry, being the sixth-most important destination globally for future investments.

Non-financial service executives, representing companies from fields such as transportation, business services, health care, legal services and education, rank Dubai among the global top 20 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) destinations.

Dubai Internet City

Despite the global credit crunch and recent crisis in Dubai its been reported that Dubai has the lowest unemployment rate due to high level of economic activity. The UAE’s unemployment rate fell to 4.2% last year from double-digit.

Minister of Economy, Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansouri, released Economic Report for 2009 by the National Statistics Bureau on this weekend.

The report showed that 53% of the UAE population is employed while 19.9% has no desire to work. Employment rate among expatriate workers is 79% while about 45% of UAE nationals are employed.

According to report majority of unemployed are fresh graduates under age of 25. The economically active workforce is aged between 25 to 54 years. Of this group, 42% is female while the average of the male working population in this age bracket is 89%.

According to the report among the emirates, the unemployment rate is lowest in Dubai due to the high level of economic activity.

However, The report showed an unexpected increase in the UAE population, touching 8.19 million in 2009, up from 8.07 million in 2008, a figure that is nearly double the 4.1 million reported during the 2006 census.

With a total GDP of Dh914 billion, this translates to Dh111,599 per capita GDP in 2009 — one of the highest in the world.
