Dubai has Announced the Launch of Self-Driving Taxi by 2026
In a press release the Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of self-driving taxi in Dubai by 2026. The RTA has announced the service in collaboration with the leading international autonoumous companies such as Uber Technologies Inc, WeRide and China’s Baidu. The self-driving taxi service will be launch via the Uber platform.

Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said in a press statement:
“Uber, through WeRide and Baidu, will begin commercial pilot operations of autonomous taxis in Dubai this year, with a safety driver behind the wheel, in preparation for a commercial launch in 2026.”
Mattar Al Tayer added:
“The expansion of autonomous vehicles will represent a qualitative shift in the transportation landscape in Dubai, while simultaneously strengthening the Roads and Transport Authority’s efforts to enhance network integration by facilitating the movement of public transport users.”
Enhance Road Safety and Convenience
In his statement, Mattar Al Tayer also mentioned that the self-driving taxi in Dubai will help to improve the road safety as more than 90% road accidents are caused by the human error. He said:
“Autonomous vehicles also contribute to improved road safety, as human error is responsible for over 90 per cent of traffic accidents.”
Al Mattar also said that the service will serve the large number of customers especially the seniors citizens, residents and people of determination. He also added that the launch of the service will support the First and Last Mile strategy which RTA adopted last year. The strategy aims to facilitate passenger movement between their point of origin or destination and the nearest public transport station.
