Dubai has issued a decree launch of ‘Dubai 2020’, a new initiative to explore the potential of Dubai to host the World Expo and the Olympics and Paralympics 2020.
Under the decree, a working committee will be chaired by Crown Prince of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president.
Other members of the committee are Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shebani, Abdul Rahman Mohammed Nassir Al Owais, Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Matar Mohammed Al Tayer, Qadhi Saeed Al Murooshid, Ahmad Abdullah Al Sheikh Yousuf Al Serkal Yacob, John Ferguson and Giselle Davies.
The Committee will consider the potential of Dubai to host the World Expo and the Olympics and Paralympics in 2020. Bringing these two global events in one place – each for the first time in the Middle East – would be a unique offering, uniting business, science and technology in sport, education and culture.
2020 Speaking of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed (left) said:”We have to exert our community here in Dubai and the UAE in a debate about our vision and the role of all in our future. We need a clear and common goal that emphasizes shared universal human values. The 2020 initiative of Dubai will see how we can shape our environment and society for future generations. It will address in an integrated fashion, the basic components that support the social and economic progress – sport, education, culture, business, science, technology, health and the environment. These two global events – the Olympics and World Expo – give us a sense of common purpose and play to our strengths. Dubai is already home to people of different nationalities and cultures living in friendship and peace. And I think we can deepen this connection and mutual understanding, working together to achieve something dramatic and meaningful.”
A feasibility study will be conducted before taking further decisions on making any formal offer to the International Olympic Committee and the International Exhibitions Bureau.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed has instructed Falcon and Associates to lead the Dubai project by 2020 and the Working Group.
