Reasons to Choose Wet Cat Food in Dubai

Wet Cat Food in UAE

Dry and wet food have their distinct pros and cons. The following are the reasons you might want to give your beloved pet wet cat food.

1. Help Ensure Sufficient Water Intake

Cats can be particularly prone to dehydration. Unlike other animals, cats do not have a vigorous appetite for water.

In fact, even when a cat’s water intake is insufficient given its dietary requirements, it may not choose to drink more water. Instead, it may simply concentrate its urine. This can lead to urinary tract problems and the development of kidney and bladder stones, among other secondary complications.

Every day, cats need from 3.5 to 4.5 ounces (0.4375-0.5625 cups) of water per five pounds of body weight. Therefore, if you have an eight-pound cat, it is your role as its owner to ensure it gets from 5.6 to 7.2 ounces or 0.7 to 0.9 cups of water per day.

Actually, that’s not a lot of water. Still, it can be challenging to get your cat to drink that much on their own, which is unfortunate because water helps cats with digestion, circulation and waste removal. It also helps cleanse toxins, maintain body temperature and keep organs functioning.

Therefore, you must ensure your cat has sufficient water intake. One of the easiest ways to do this is by feeding your cat wet cat food.

The moisture content of wet cat food varies from brand to brand. Generally speaking, however, wet cat food has a moisture content of 70-80%. Therefore, wet cat food can ensure sufficient water intake for your pet cat.

In contrast, when feeding your cat dry food, you must carefully monitor your cat’s water intake. You have to make sure that your cat drinks water from his water bowl, and that can be difficult given a cat’s propensity to ignore its water requirements.

2. Ensure High Protein Intake

Cats are carnivores, and they benefit from a high-protein diet. Specifically, cats require animal protein, which is their source for essential amino acids like arginine, histidine, lysine, taurine, and more. Furthermore, cat food must contain a minimum of 26% protein for general maintenance. However, for growth and reproduction purposes, they must have a minimum of 30% protein content.

Consider a wet cat food diet if you want to easily ensure your pet cat has the correct protein intake. Wet cat food normally has a higher protein content than dry cat food. Yes, even when the label on the cat food seems to indicate otherwise.

You see, protein content must be calculated on a dry matter basis. In other words, compare the protein content to the dry matter content of your cat food to see how much protein the cat food contains.

To illustrate, if your dry cat food label says it has 30% protein content, that is its protein content. Dry cat food is all dry matter, so you do not need to compute any further.

In wet cat food, however, first, you have to derive the dry matter content before determining the actual protein content.

To do this, check the wet cat food’s moisture content. If it’s 70%, that means the cat food is 70% water by weight and 30% dry matter. That is 100% minus 70% water content.

To determine actual protein content on wet food, divide the protein content indicated on the label by the dry matter content. If the label says it has a 14% protein content, the wet cat food is 46.7% protein. That is 14% nominal protein content divided by 30% dry matter.

3. Manage Weight

Wet cat food is less energy-dense (fewer calories per gram) than dry cat food. Again, this is mainly due to wet cat food’s high water content. Water, as you know, does not provide any calories.

Wet cat food, therefore, provides fewer calories than dry cat food. Whereas the latter offers an average of three to four kilocalories per gram of food, the former provides only an average of 0.8 to 0.15 kilocalorie per gram.

This means wet cat food can fill your cat even though it doesn’t impart as many calories as dry cat food. This is an advantage if you are trying to manage your cat’s weight — say, if your cat is a little obese.
