A public or private notary in Dubai is an entity with proven integrity, serving as the impartial witness to the signing of legal documents. This includes legal depositions, trusts, wills, powers of attorney, and affidavits. The federal and local governments in UAE appoint and commission public notaries as authorized public officers. Their position comes with trust and responsibility.

Notarization of documents in Dubai and the rest of UAE involve these three parts:

  • Vetting of the signatories and verifying their identity, awareness of the document contents, and willingness to sign
  • Stamping and signing of the document signed by signatories

The basic requirements for processing the notarization of your documents in UAE are as follows:

1. Unsigned document – two copies of the unsigned document to be signed in the presence of the public notary in Dubai or the rest of the emirates.

2. Two government-issued valid IDs – bring two original identification documents issued by the government. The IDs must show the signatory’s full name, clear photo, and signature. Include two photocopies of the identification documents. A public notary in Dubai will check both the name and signature that is on a document against the IDs that are presented. This is done for consistency and to prevent fraud.

3. Payment – The cost of notarizing documents will depend on the public notary’s fees, number of signatories, type of document to be notarized by the notary, and other factors. Payment for the notarial act can be through company check, money order or cash.

Reasons Why Documents Need Notarization in Dubai

Why need notary in Dubai

There are a lot of reasons as to why documents are required to undergo document notarization in the UAE. This includes:

  • Deters forgery and fraud – there are already a lot of scammers who take advantage of those who they consider as vulnerable. By having a trustworthy public notary in UAE verify the identity of a signatory, there is a much-needed layer of protection for the implementation of crucial documents.
  • Elevates a document’s credibility and validity – a lot of documents aren’t considered legally binding until they’re notarized by a public notary in the UAE. Even though this does not apply to all types of documents, document notarization will still prove to be beneficial. This is because the stamp and/or seal of a notary increases the authenticity and inherent value of a notarized document.
  • Provides legal protection – having documents notarized in UAE will help prevent costly litigation and contract disputes between signatories down the line.
  • Avoids the need for witnesses to appear during legal proceedings – under the relevant legislation for evidence, notarized documents are already considered as self-authenticating. What this means is they can be submitted as legal evidence during trials. There will no longer be a need for additional proof. It is, therefore, evident that the act of notarizing documents prevents witnesses from needing to be present during litigation. This ultimately saves time and money.
